Migraine and tension headache

Many people suffer from tension headaches or migraines. The cause of most types of headaches is unknown but there are indications that in most cases there is an increased tension in certain muscles. In Leiden, in the LUMC (University Hosptital) extensive research has been done on the effect of Botulinum Toxin in headaches and migraines. In the UK and the USA the treatment of migraine using Botulinum Toxin is common practice and is covered my most medical insurances.

Dr Tom van Eijk has 15 years of experience in treating migraines with Botox.

Migraine, tension headache and botulinum toxin (Botox®, Azzalure®)

Botulinum toxin is a medicine of which in the last decades a positive effect in a variety of conditions concerning an increased muscle tension is researched. The exact mechanism is still the subject of several studies, but experience shows that about 75% of migraine (and other headache-) patients benefit from the use of Botulinum toxin. In these patients, there is a marked relief of the symptoms.

Treatment of migraine and tension headaches in Laren and Amsterdam

In general, a treatment of the frown is sufficient to bring a clear improvement of the symptoms. Sometimes the pathway of the pain symptoms can indicate the need for further treatment for areas such as the back of the head or the neck. In finding the optimum treatment schedule we ask the patient to register the complaints in a dairy to indicate what dose of toxin and what position of the injections give the best results. The procedure itself is not regarded painful by most patients. Optionally, the skin may be anesthetized using an anesthetic cream.

The effect of the treatment is always temporarily (four to six months). Possible side effects of a treatment with botulinum toxin is linked to the puncture itself (possibly a temporary small blue discoloration) and the effect of the treatment; sometimes there can be some weakness in the injected muscle. This effect is also temporary.

In the Netherlands, this treatment is not covered by health insurers. The price of the treatment is dependent on the amount of botulinum toxin that is necessary for an optimal effect. In general, the doctor will start with a dose, comparable to what is called ‘one region’ in the cosmetic application.
